Alternative hip-hop rappers return with a new EP.
Last
year’s Dual Sides album was a major success for Yorkshire
trio, Ceiling Demons. It served to prove
that there is originality and confidence in a UK hip-hop act, and
succeeded. Support for the CALM charity
and festival appearances alongside the likes of The Charlatans, Billy Bragg and
Sugarhill Gang have further endorsed their growing popularity.
The
identical twins Psy Ceiling and Dan Demon have now been reunited with Beat
Demon to drop a new EP of three songs once more showing that there is light and
hope in the UK hip-hop scene.
Opener,
Even If borrows a dreamy hook line from Nearly Midnight Honolulu by Neko Case. Beginning with a sliding backwards played
intro of Neko’s voice, a slow drumbeat fades in with constant vocal repeats against
a looped guitar and occasional synth blips and bleeps. The rap fits superbly with the backing which
has become almost a trademark for the Demons, and their choice of music and
words once more far belies their age.
Talking
to the young men, their knowledge of music past and present is impressive, and
their love for their craft is plain to see. They are completely open-minded to all music
genres and obviously see it as a means to be influenced from all angles.
Two
more new tracks grace the virtual b-side with Feels Like Forever which again
moves gracefully and simply through another fantasy tinged adventure. Almost a spacelike journey, there’s a meaty
rap just past the mid-way mark and the catchy repeat of the title by guest
Swift’89 is incredibly infectious.
Third
track, The Quiet features an electronic cavalcade of virtuo violins and a more
spoken voice than rap. It’s a short
track, with no chorus as such but is superbly intriguing and demands several
more listens as it unfolds with an ever increasing arrangement.
Once
more, Ceiling Demons come up with the goods.
